Not quite but they are really as good as all the above—soft, doughy, and fluffy. Once you have one, you just can’t stop. And the best thing of all, they take only 3 minutes to make, seriously.
They are fried Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits. Yes, those biscuits that you always bake, or even steamed to create Chinese bao (steamed buns)…
They were fried to golden brown (took less than 2 minutes) and then dusted generously with sugar. It’s not conventional, but trust me on this one: once you taste these babies, you will probably not bake them anymore! Look at the pictures, puffy, pillowy, sugared fried dough balls. Can you say no?

Ingredients
- 1 tube pillsbury biscuits, buttermilk flavor, contains 10 doughs
- sugar
- oil , for deep frying
Instructions
- Separate each dough piece from the tube and drop them into a frying pan (with enough heated oil) or a deep fryer. Turn them over and fry evenly until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes. Transfer them out, dust with sugar, and serve immediately.

I have been making these for my children,, which are grown now. I would give each one a tube and let them make what ever shape they wanted. After they were freed they would either put frosting or jams with sprinkles . Still do make them. I found them to be a little healthier than regular donuts . Thank you for the memory.

My son had many food allergies when he was little, but he could eat Pillsbury biscuits. He felt left out of the donut eaters, though.I began making donuts and donut holes for him like this, and he loved them! That was over 30 years ago!

Directions say ‘enough heated oil’. How deep in a frying pan, and what temperature should the oil be??
My mother made these for us when I was a kid. She would drop the cooked ones into a brown paper bag and fold the top over. We would shake them to blot the oil, then drop them into a second bag with either cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar and then would shake to coat. We called them donut holes. Thanks for the memory!

Can you bake these instead of frying?
I think so but it won’t be the same.
Iโve been doing that, and I cut them up in pieces and use a honey butter cinnamon sugar sauce and toss that all together in a bowl after baking. However this way seems way more tasty ?
WOW! My grandmother, God rest her kind soul, used to make these when I was a kid (more long ago than I care to admit). She was the cook of all cooks and everything for her was made from scratch… except these quick grandchildren pleasing easy treats. lol! I’ve made them for my kids too and haven’t done so in a while. I’m glad you reminded me. I’ve got a can of biscuits in the refrigerator and this has their name written all over them.
