Honey lemon chicken is one of my favorites. To clarify, it’s a combination of two of my favorite recipes: honey chicken and lemon chicken. As a result, it’s no wonder that it’s a favorite of mine.
Crispy Honey Lemon Chicken
Imagine battered chicken fried to a crispy goodness and doused in a sweet honey and lemony sauce. Certainly, the thought of it is enough to set my mouth watering.
Cooking Tips
- The easiest way to fry the chicken is to use shallow frying.
- So, you don’t need a lot of oil. Just fry the chicken over medium heat until they become crunchy and crispy. On the other hand, it takes longer, but the result is rewarding.

Honey Lemon Chicken
Ingredients
- 12 oz (350g) chicken breast, cut into thin strips
- oil , for deep-frying
- 1 lettuce leaf
- toasted sesame seeds , to garnish
Marinade:
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
Honey Lemon Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Frying Batter:
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Marinate the chicken strips with all the Marinade ingredients for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, prepare the frying batter by lightly whisking the egg and mixing in the remaining batter ingredients.
- The batter should be smooth, without lumps or being too runny. Drop the chicken strips into the batter and mix well until they are fully coated. In a separate bowl, mix all the ingredients for the honey lemon sauce thoroughly and set aside.
- Heat oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Gently drop in the battered chicken strips, ensuring they are spread out to prevent sticking together while frying. Deep-fry the chicken strips until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- In a saucepan, gently pour in the honey lemon sauce and bring it to a light simmer. Stir quickly until the sauce bubbles, then remove from heat.
- Place a lettuce leaf on a plate, top it with the chicken strips, and pour the Honey Lemon Sauce over them. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve immediately with steamed rice.

The recipe calls for “all purpose flour” – would plain flour be the equivalent (in Australia)?
I think so.

Hello Bee ! Very easy recipe for Honey Lemon chicken. Thank you for this . It looks delish. I am planning to make it tonight. Have a question to ask what can we use instead of all purpose flour in this recipe ? TIA :-)
You can just use corn starch.

I really wanted to eat this dish tonight, I’m so glad I found your recipe, it was absolutely delicious. Thank you!
We eat gluten free, I know that when coming with gf flour we are to add an extra egg, but even with 2eggsI knew the batter wouldn’t coast all the chicken I had. If you’re like me and cooking lots of chicken because you know it’s going to be so yummy and a family of 5 will eat as much as there is to eat, 3 eggs works….
Thank you so much for including grams (g) in this recipe!
On e of my favourite American dishes! Always try and get this when I’m in the US.
Oh my god! Never thought about using honey when cooking. Will definitely try this. Sounds so yummy! xx
Sorry, I meant that egg is listed twice, once where it says ingredients and again where it says frying batter.
Ah I see, thanks for catching that. Updated. :)
