Honey Lemon Chicken
Ingredients
- 12 oz (350g) chicken breast, cut into thin strips
- oil , for deep-frying
- 1 lettuce leaf
- toasted sesame seeds , to garnish
Marinade:
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
Honey Lemon Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Frying Batter:
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Marinate the chicken strips with all the Marinade ingredients for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, prepare the frying batter by lightly whisking the egg and mixing in the remaining batter ingredients.
- The batter should be smooth, without lumps or being too runny. Drop the chicken strips into the batter and mix well until they are fully coated. In a separate bowl, mix all the ingredients for the honey lemon sauce thoroughly and set aside.
- Heat oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Gently drop in the battered chicken strips, ensuring they are spread out to prevent sticking together while frying. Deep-fry the chicken strips until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- In a saucepan, gently pour in the honey lemon sauce and bring it to a light simmer. Stir quickly until the sauce bubbles, then remove from heat.
- Place a lettuce leaf on a plate, top it with the chicken strips, and pour the Honey Lemon Sauce over them. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve immediately with steamed rice.

Making this today…Am I marinating the chicken with two whisked eggs?
NO, the recipe says: Marinate the chicken strips with all the ingredients of Marinade for 10 minutes. There is no egg in the Marinade.
Am I marinating the chicken with two whisked eggs?
In the marinade ingredients I cannot see any eggs mentioned.
This recipe is extremely good, but it goes up to supurb if you add the zest of the lemon to the honey sauce! Maybe not the ‘healthiest’ recipe, but as a once a month treat it’s sublime!
Great idea I will have to try it.
May I ask if i should use freshly squeezed lemon juice or lemon juice concentrate? Thank you!
Freshly squeezed lemon juice.
What brand is the flour for this recipe? Tq
actually pepper offers good taste, thanks
The frying batter didn’t turn out smooth at all….Can I add water in the frying batter??
Yes.
Sounds good but I see no need to coat and fry the chicken. I bet it will be just as good with just sautรฉing the chicken and then adding the sauce to the pan to quickly heat it up together. Way less fat.
Sure you can do that.
Thanks Dixie, but some of us enjoy recipes the way they are intended to be made. Coating and deep frying the chicken is a very different result than sautรฉing and saucing. This isnt a diet blog, thank you though. I’ll be following Bee’s instructions, and enjoying the crispy, intended version.
Why is it that honey lemon chicken is so darn addictive? I can’t wait to try your version!
Rach, this is so yummy your kiddos would love it!
Bee- love your recipes. This looks like another to add to my collection. Fyi- take that honey out of the fridge, and keep it in your pantry. No need to refrigerate it.
How long can I keep honey / manuka honey, is there expiry date of honey?
Thank you.
You should check the expiration date on your bottle.
Im a BeeKeeper …honey lasts forever!!!…It has such a low ph that it requires NO refrigeration and will last as far as they know..3000 years. It has soo many benefits. Enjoy it, its made with love ..buy Local!!
3000 years! Wow, now I can be rest assured about keeping honey for as long as I want!
Honey will keep forever and never will go bad. It may chrystalize though. Then you can put it in the microwave or put the bottle in warm water.
Yes Deb, I don’t like the chrystalize part. Thanks for your info.
