What Is Broccolini

Broccolini is a healthy green vegetable and a hybrid between broccoli and Chinese gai lan (Chinese broccoli).

When you have a hybrid, the taste combines the best of both vegetables.

Broccolini has smaller florets and much longer and thinner stems. The florets have more of a bite and the stems are crunchy.

This healthy vegetable is always available in my neighborhood grocery stores and farmers market.

It’s in season now so I decided to make this easy recipe of garlic butter sauteed broccolini.

The recipe takes only 10 minutes to make from start to finish.


How To Cook Broccolini

The best way to cook is a simple saute in a pan with simple ingredients below:

  • Garlic
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • Lemon juice

Broccolini with Garlic Butter

Ingredients  

  • 1 lb (500g) broccolini
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • salt, to taste
  • ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 squirt lemon juice

Instructions 

  • Trim the bottom part of the broccolini stems by about 1/2 inch (1 cm).
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Sauté the garlic until it turns light brown, then add the broccolini. Toss with a spatula to combine well with the garlic.
  • Add salt and ground black pepper to taste, along with a few squirts of lemon juice. Once the stems of the broccolini become tender, remove from heat and serve immediately.

    Tried this with something labelled baby broccoli, but looked like broccolini. I’ve not had broccolini, so I don’t know the difference. This recipe was delicious! Added a bit of broth after the broccoli was browned in the skillet because I wanted it softer. Also added some sesame oil and seeds before serving. So much flavor! Loved the lime with it too! (Didn’t have a lemon.)

    To reduce the bitterness, be sure to first blanch the broccolini in boiling water for 1-2 min, and then saute. It improves the final result hugely. Also broccolini is not a hybrid of broccoli and gai lan, it is actually of the mustard family, popular in Italy, but relatively unknown elsewhere.

      I think you may be confusing broccolini with broccoli rabe. The latter is indeed bitter, and a cross with the turnip/mustard green family.
