Grilled Chicken Wings Rub

The rub is Chinese five spice powder. I love it as a chicken wings rub because the spice blend adds so much flavors and aromas to chicken.

You can get bottled five spice powder at the spice aisle of supermarkets as major spice companies have the product. It’s very easy to use. Just use a little bit as a rub or a marinade ingredient.

Chicken Wings Marinade

Easy grilled chicken wings recipe with five spice powder rub on a plate.

Other than five spice powder, these chicken wings are marinated with seasoning ingredients below:

  • Oyster sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Honey
  • Garlic
  • Sesame oil

How To Grill Chicken Wings

Five spice grilled chicken wings picked with a pair of chopsticks.

If you have a gas grill, here are the step by step:

  • Preheat the gas grill to medium heat. Grilling chicken wings over direct heat will char the skin and bring out amazing flavors and aroma. However, too much heat will burn the chicken wings while the inside is uncooked.
  • Arrange the wings on the grill. Grill with direct heat until the skin is moderately charred but not burned. Turn over and grill the other side until charred.
  • Turn the heat to medium-low and move the wings to the side where there is no direct flame and heat. Continue to grill the wings until the inside is cooked through.
  • Check the internal temperature of the wings. It should be cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Remove the wings from the grill and serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

I also like to put em under the broiler for an additional 3m on each side. This way it gives โ€˜em the perfect bbqโ€™d wings look. My family LOVES

  10. Owen Bartrop says:

You may think me slightly factitious but the Five Spice Grilled Chicken Wings recipe has me guessing.
I see that the dish is sprinkled with sesame seeds and accompanied by a bowl of what? Neither is menthoned in the recipe itself. While I am at it, soy sauce is listed but not whether it is dark or light. I was led to believe dark is for cooking and light for serving. Is this correct?

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Owen, I use sesame seeds a lot as garnishing for food photography purposes. They are not required in the recipe. For the sauce, it’s just chili sauce as a condiment for food photography purposes. Soy sauce = light soy sauce, unless it calls for dark soy sauce specifically. Dark is hardly used for adding colors to the dish. It’s not used that much.
