Ingredients

Banana Bread Batter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greasing the loaf pan (1 stick or 4 oz. (113g) butter)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the loaf pan
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs , plus 1 large egg yolk divided
  • 3 ripe bananas, 480 g (17 oz)

Cream Cheese Filling

  • 4 oz (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and butter and flour a 9"x5" loaf pan. In a bowl, mash the bananas with a masher and set aside.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup of flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another large bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, melted butter, buttermilk, vanilla extract, 1 egg, and 1 egg yolk. Mix until smooth. Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir until combined, then fold in the mashed bananas.
  • To make the cream cheese filling, combine the remaining egg, cream cheese, 2 tablespoons of flour, and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a small bowl. Stir until well blended and smooth.
  • Transfer half of the banana bread batter to the prepared loaf pan. Then, dollop the cream cheese filling on top and smooth it into an even layer using a spatula. Finally, pour the remaining batter over the cream cheese filling, spreading it evenly to cover.
  • Bake the banana bread until it's deeply golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 1 hour. Once done, let it cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

  1. Grace says:

I tried to make this but my cake didn’t rise, what could the reason be? I definitely added the baking powder.

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Hi Grace, I don’t know what to say because it shouldn’t have happened. I am sure certain steps you did it wrong or your measurements are off.

  2. Sharon says:

Hi… am trying to make this now but the Cream Cheese Filling recipe is confusing because you say there is egg in it later on but not in the original recipe. Does the Cream Cheese Filling have ONE EGG in it? ONE EGG PLUS ONE EGGWHITE? Or NO EGG (as written orginally)?
Thanks for your help with this ?

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Yes, it’s one egg. It says the remaining egg, which means one egg in the cream cheese mixture.

  3. Julie says:

My girls absolutely loved this banana bread recipe! Possibly our new favorite. Side note, I didn’t have any buttermilk on hand so I just added white vinegar to 2% milk and it worked perfectly.

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Hi Julie, how much white vinegar did you add? Good idea and I am so glad your girls loved this cheesecake banana bread recipe. :)

  4. Gina says:

Rasa: I LOVE your site! My fave so far has been the shrimp balls. You can’t go wrong with any of your recipes. I’m anxious to try this new Pad Thai one you just posted. Keep it up girl! I’m a fan forever. Can’t wait to try the banana bread too.

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Hi Kathy, awww, thanks so much for your sweet comment, I am so happy to read it. Yes, shrimp balls are so bomb, just like dim sum restaurants. Yes, do try the Pad Thai and this cheesecake banana bread, so yummy! :)

  6. Maria W says:

I don’t like banana bread…What can I use instead of bananas? applesauce ?

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

If you don’t like banana bread, then don’t make it. Sorry but you can’t use apple sauce for banana bread.

  7. Grace says:

Looks delicious! What type of sugar should be used and can the buttermilk be substituted for normal cow’s milk?

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

White sugar. I am not sure but you can try! Buttermilk has a sour taste but I think it should be ok.

    2. Mel says:

This looks fabulous. If you can’t get buttermilk, take the 1/4 cup of milk this calls for and remove 1 tsp of milk and replace it with vinegar. Generally people use white vinegar, but cider will do fine too. Let the milk set for like 5-10 minutes before you add it to the recipe.

      1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Hi Mel, thanks for sharing the buttermilk tip for this cheesecake banana bread.

  8. Jenny says:

    1) where do i get buttermilk?
    2) Can i reduce the amount of sugar stated above?

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

At the store you can get buttermilk. Yes you can cut down the sugar.

  9. Jean Moore says:

WOW. This looks delicious. Anxious to try it.

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

Yes, very delicious, you have to make this cheesecake banana bread.
